Abu Mena is an ancient Christian heritage site in Egypt. The site includes the church, baptistry, basilicas, public buildings, monasteries, and other relics from the early Christian settlement built over the tomb of the martyr Menas of Alexandria, who died in AD 296.

Abu Mena was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 3rd session of the World Heritage Committee in Cairo and Luxor, on 22-26 October, 1979. Abu Mena was added to the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2001.

Visiting Abu Mena

Abu Mena can be visited through the city of Alexandria. You can reach Alexandria by flying to the El Nouzha Airport (ALY), 8km to the southeast of Alexandria. Olympic Airlines is presently the only European airline flying there. You can also take Emirates from Dubai to Dorg el Arab Airport (HBE), 25 km to the southwest of Alexandria. You should arrange with a local operator for visiting Abu Mena.
