Today part of modern Cairo, the old city is an enclave with many famous mosques as well as madrasas, hammams and fountains. The ancient city of Cairo was founded in the 10th century, when it became the new centre of the Islamic world. It reached its peak during the 14th century, when it was one of the most important cities of the Muslim world.

Ancient Cairo was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 3rd session of the World Heritage Committee held in Cairo and Luxor on 22-26 October, 1976.

Visiting Ancient Cairo

Cairo International Airport (CAI) is a major airport served by several international carriers. It comprises three terminals. You can transfer between terminals by taking the free shuttle bus. A taxi to downtown Cairo, with good negotiation skills through in, should be around E£40.00. Roads are often congested, so allow as much as three hours on your return for your flight out.
