The city of Arles in France has an impressive number of Roman monuments. These include the arena, theatre and the cryptoporticus or subterranean galleries, all constructed in the 1st century BC.

In addition to the Roman monuments, Arles also has ruins from the 4th century, including the baths of Constantine and the necropolis of Alyscamps. In the 11th and 12th centuries the city once again enjoyed a third construction wave, with the building of Saint-Trophime and its closters, it is regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the Mediterranean.

Arles, Roman and Romanesque Monuments was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 5th session of the World Heritage Committee which met in Sydney, Australia, on 26 - 30 October, 1981.
