The oldest of the Armenian monasteries is Saint Thaddeus. It dates from the 7th century. Located in the West Azarbaijan Province, about 20 km from Maku, the Saint Thaddeus Monastery was named after St Thaddeus, also called Saint Jude. Martyred while spreading the Gospel, St Thaddeus is revered by the Armenian Church. The church structure that we see today dates from the rebuilding effort undertaken in 1329 after it was damaged by earthquake ten years earlier.
