Bordeaux, the Port of the Moon holds the distinction of having more protected buildings than any other city in France except Paris France. The port city of Bordeaux is recognised for the significant role it played in the exchange of cultural values, particularly with Britain and the Low Lands.

The development of Bordeaux, particularly in the early 18th century, showcases it as an outstanding example of innovative classical and Neo-Classical trends. The urban design of Bordeaux is lauded for being a successful melting pot of humanism, universality and culture. Bordeaux, Port of the Moon was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 31st session of the World Heritage Committee which met in Christchurch, New Zealand, on 23 June - 2 July, 2007.
