The Horyuji Temple is the first batch of monuments in Japan to be inscribed as World Heritage Sites. It is located in just outside the ancient city of Nara. Within the Horyuji Area are some 48 Buddhist monuments. They comprise 21 structures in the Horyuji East Temple, 9 in the West Temple, 17 monastery and the pagoda of Hokkiji. They are some of the oldest extent wooden buildings in the world, some dating back to the 7th and 8th century. The Buddhist Monuments in the Horyuji area are masterpieces of wooden architecture. They show how the Japanese adapted Chinese Buddhist architecture to their indigenous culture, and offers important lessons on the history of art and religion in Japan. Buddhist Monuments in the Horyuji Area was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 17th session of the World Heritage Committee which met in Cartegena, Colombia, on 6-11 December, 1993.
