The town attracted a number of writers and scholars in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, among them Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller. The cultural flowering due to the presence of these writers and scholars resulted in the high quality of its buildings and parks.

Classical Weimar was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 22nd session of the World Heritage Committee in Kyoto, Japan, on 30 November - 5 December, 1998.
