It was founded by diamond prospectors in the 18th century, and is an outstanding example of human cultural and artistic expression in a challenging environment.

Diamantina was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 23rd session of the World Heritage Committee meeting in Marrakesh, Morocco, from 29 November to 4 December, 1999.
