 Durmitor National Park, Montenegro
Durmitor National Park is a national park in Montenegro that has been recognized as a World Heritage Site. The national park encompasses the canyon of the Tara river, its deep gorges and the plateau of Mount Durmitor. Within the area are three major geomorphologic features: the canyons, the mountains and the plateaux. Together they preserve a diverse range of landscapes covering the Mediterranean as well as alpine regions of Montenegro.

The outstanding feature of Durmitor National Park lies in its rugged beauty. Within this region are 16 glacial lakes and pristine rivers, of which the Tara river is regarded as the last wild rivers of Europe. The vegetatian of the national park encompasses deciduous forest, coniferous forest and subalpine vegetation. There are a good number of pine species that are endemic to the area which also contains the last virgin black pine forest in Europe.
The landscape of Durmitor National Park is characterised by limestone formations. These were formed during the Upper Triassic, Upper Jurassic and Upper Cretaceous periods. Over time, the rocks and limstone have shown signs of natural erosion.

Durmitor National Park was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 4th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris, France, 1 - 5 September, 1980.
