The construction of Ferrara neighborhoods by Biagio Rossetti in 1492 gave birth to the concept of the ideal city, which in turn has a great impact on modern town planning. The influence of Renaissance culture can be seen on the Este ducal residences in the Po Delta; these were the work of Piero della Francesca, Jacopo Bellini and Andrea Mantegna.

Ferrara, City of the Renaissance and its Po Delta was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 19th session of the World Heritage Committee in Berlin, Germany, on 4 - 9 December, 1995.
