Grand Canyon National Park is a World Heritage Site in Arizona, the United States. Covering an area of 1,217,403 acres, it is also one of the oldest national parks in the country.
The Grand Canyon is actually a gorge that was carved by the Colorado River and its tributaries as the Colorado Plateau was uplifted over a course of two billion years. At nearly 1,500 meters in depth, it is regarded as the most spectacular canyon in the world. The canyon is visited by over four million people annually. The majority head to the South Rim via Arizona State Route 64.
Grand Canyon National Park was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 3rd session of the World Heritage Committee that was held in Luxor, Egypt, on 22 - 26 October, 1979.
