The town of Urbino still retains the picturesque medieval appearance. Its location on a hill slope makes it particularly photogenic. The town is also the home of the University of Urbino founded in 1506. The most important building in town is the Palazzo Ducale, the ducal palace, built for Duke Federico da Montefeltro. Historic Centre of Urbino was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 22nd session of the World Heritage Committee in Kyoto, Japan, on 30 November - 5 December, 1998.
