The outstanding universal feature of the old town of Querétaro is reflected in the street plan. The original twisting alleys in the native quarters of the city are retained alongside the grid plan laid by the Spanish conquerors. Although the Spanish and natives fought each other before the city was established, the town plan shows that the various indigenous tribes were able to live in peace with the Spanish, which erect ornate civil and religious Baroque structures, many of which are well preserved to this day.

According to the World Heritage Committee, Querétaro is "an exceptional example of a colonial town whose layout symbolizes its multi-ethnic population." Unlike many towns in Mexico, Querétaro is given a native name which means "at the ball court", in reference to the narrow valley in which it is situated.

The location of Querétaro made it an important supply hub for the mining towns of Guanajuato and Zacatecas, and this no doubt contribute to its wealth, which is reflected in the fine buildings erected in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Historic Monuments Zone of Querétaro was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 20th session of the World Heritage Committee Mérida, Mexico, 2 - 7 December, 1996.
