The city of Kutná Hora was established due to the mining of silver in the region. It was founded around 1142 as a settlement of the first Cistercian Monastery in Bohemia. The mining of silver, done by German miners, began around 1260. The resulting prosperity from silver mining enabled it to be given the status of royal city in the 14th century.

Between the 13th and 16th centuries Kutná Hora rivalled Prague as one of the most developed city in the Czech Republic. Symbols of its golden age can be seen from the splendid Church of St Barbara, regarded as a jewel of the Late Gothic period, and the Cathedral of Our Lady at Sedlec, one of the most beautiful Baroque churches of the early 18th century.

In 1995 Kutná Hora and neighboring Sedlec were inscribed as a World Heritage Site. Added to the inscription were the Church of St Barbara and the Cathedral of Our Lady at Sedlec. The inscription took place during the 19th session of the World Heritage Committee which was held in Berlin, Germany, on 4-9 December, 1995.
