The Monastic Island of Reichenau is a World Heritage Site on Lake Constance in Germany. On the island is the Abbey of Reichenau, a Benedictine monastery founded in AD 724. The abbey had a great spiritual, intellectural and artistic influence on the cultural landscape of the area. The abbey's church is dedicated to St Mary and St Mark. Also on the island is the church to St Peter and St Paul, and the church to St George, all built between the 9th and the 11th centuries. These churches provide a glimpse at the medieval monastic architecture of central Europe.
