Provins is especially famous for hosting fairs related to the wool industry. The town structure was specially planned and designed so that it could be a regular venue for such fairs. Much of this has been preserved and can be appreciated today.

Provins, Town of Medieval Fairs was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 25th session of the World Heritage Committee in Helsinki, Finland, on 11 - 16 December, 2001.
