Rock Drawings in Valcamonica are some of the most important collection of prehistoric petroglyphs in the world. So far, some 140,000 figures have been recognised and documented, with new ones still being catalogued, with an expectation that the total may rise to 200,000 or even more.
The rock drawings are found all over the Val Camonica valley, but are most concentrated in Darfo Boario Terme, Capo di Ponte, Nadro, Cimbergo and Paspardo. These rock drawings are incisions created some eight thousand years ago. The culture of creating petroglyphs did not die abruptly, but dwindled in numbers towards the end. There are some that have been attributed to the Roman period, to the medieval period and even right up to the 19th century.
Rock Drawings in Valcamonica was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 3rd session of the World Heritage Committee which met in Cairo and Luxor, Egypt on 22 to 26 October, 1979.
