Jurisdiction of Saint-Emilion is an area in France devoted to wine growing that is today a World Heritage Site. Wine growing, or viticulture, was introduced here during Roman times. The area benefited from being on the route of the Santiago de Compostela pilgrims, the result of which many churches and monasteries were built there since the 11th century.
