Visiting San Agustín Archaeological Park

San Agustín is 9 hours from Bogotá by bus. On your way, you will pass through scenic views of the Tatacoa Desert and Magdalena River.

In San Agustín, the archaeological site is scattered over a wide area. The best way to explore is on foot, as the scenery is often panoramic. Alternatively you may rent a horse or join a jeep tour.

Parque Arqueologico, or the archaeological park, is the main sight to visit. You can view the ancient burial sites and ancient statues here. There is also a small museum providing details. The park is open 8:00 am to 4:00 pm every day, and entrance fee is COP$6000.

Alto de los Idoles is a smaller site, but just as impressive as the archaeological park. The views are simply spectacular here.

There are four more sites to visit, if you have the time. Chaquira is a site overlooking the Rio Magdalena valley. La Pelota has well-preserved statues, some with their original paint. El Prutal is yet another site. Obando has underground tombs and a small museum showcasing ancient pottery.
