Srebana Nature Reserve, Bulgaria

Srebarna Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in northwestern Bulgaria. It is located 18 km to the west of Silistra, and 2 km to the south of the Danube river, near the village of Srebarna. Within Srebarna Nature Reserve is Lake Srebarna, an important wildfowl migration route between Europe and Africa.
Srebarna Nature Reserve was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 7th session of the World Heritage Committee in Florence, Italy, on 5-9 December, 1983. It is recognised for its importance as a migratory bird sanctuary.

More than 100 species of birds used Srebarna Nature Reserve as a breeding ground. Some 80 species use it as a refuge in winter. Among the birds that can be seen at Srebarna Nature Reserve include the Dalmatian pelican, the great egret, the Marsh-harrier, the night heron, the purple heron, the Greylag Goose, the Bluethroat, the glossy ibis, the cormorants, the Mute Swans, and the white spoonbill.
In addition to the bird species, the nature reserve is also home to 39 species of mammals, 21 species of reptiles and amphibians, and 10 species of fish.

The property covers a core zone of 638 hectare surrounded by a 673 hectare buffer zone in the village of Srebarna, in the Province of Silistra, 16 km to the west of the town of Silistra, and 1 km south of the Danube, in Bulgaria.
