The squares and their surrounding buildings were designed by a team of architects headed by royal architect Emmanuel Héré de Corny. The intention of Place Stanislas, Place de la Carrière and Place d'Alliance was to enhance the king's prestige while still staying functional. The design bridges two handsome buildings, the Hôtel de Ville, now located right at the center of the square, and the Hôtel du Gouvernement.

Place Stanislas measures 125 meters by 106 meters. It is paved with light ochre stones, with a pattern formed by two lines of darker stones. Surrounding the square are the following buildings, all designed to blend harmoniously to the surroundings:
  1. Hôtel de Ville
The City Hall of Nancy. It occupies the south side of Place Stanislas.

  2. Opéra-Theâtre and the Grand Hôtel
The Opéra Theâtre was formerly the bishop's palace while the Grand Hôtel was formerly the Hôtel de la Reine.

  3. Musée des Beaux Arts
Originally the Collège de Médecine, on the west side of Place Stanislas.
