Tabriz is said to have been around since the time of the Silk Road in the 13th century. At that time, Tabriz was the capital of the Safavid kingdom. Although the city lost its position as capital in the 16th century, the importance of its bazaar complex has not waned.

The Historic Bazaar Complex of Tabriz stands today as one of the most complete examples of the traditional commercial area of the Middle East. It was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 34th session of the World Heritage Committee in Brasilia, Brazil, 25 July - 3 August, 2010.
