Not only is Tsingy de Bemaraha noted for its jagged rock formations, it is also an important mangrove forest preserve harbouring substantial population of wild birds and lemurs. Most visitors who come to Tsingy de Bemaraha do so to view the "tsingy peaks". These are the limestone needles that covers the canyon of the Manambolo River. The forest appears to peek out in between the soaring karst outcrops.

Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 14th session of the World Heritage Committee in Banff, Canada, 7 - 12 December, 1990.

The vegetation of Tsingy de Bemaraha is that of dry deciduous forest and savannah. The karst landscape comes to an abrupt end where the Hanambolo River forms a sheer cliff to the east. This continues to the south where it becomes the Hanambolo River Gorge. On the western side, the terrain forms a more gentle slope comprising a plateau punctuated by low hills that undulate towards the west.
