Villa Romana del Casale is a symbol of the Roman exploitation of the countryside. It was built in the first quarter of the 4th century and is located just olutside the town of Piazza Armerina in Sicily.

The well-preserved villa displays the fine mosaics used to decorate almost every room. They are some of the most exquisite mosaics in situ to be seen anywhere in the Roman world.

Villa Romana del Casale was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 21st session of the World Heritage Committee in Naples, Italy, on 1 - 6 December, 1997.
