The Wolong National Nature Reserve is the most famous site in China for viewing the Giant Panda. Wolong, which means "Reclining Dragon", is located in Wenchuan County in Sichuan Province. The nature reserve was established in 1963 and covers an area of approximately 200,000 hectares. There are 4,000 different species of animals and plants in the nature reserve, include 150 highly endangered giant pandas.

To provide better protection to the giant pandas, the Chinese government together with the World Wildlife Fund established the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in 1980. Research conducted here has led to the successful breeding of 66 panda cubs.

A massive earthquake that happened in May 2008 wrecked extensive damage and injuring some of tha pandas in the reserve.

The Wolong National Nature Reserve was one of the Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries inscribed along with Mount Siguniang and Jiajin Mountains as a World Heritage Site during the 30th session of the World Heritage Committee which took place in Vilnius, Lithuania, on 9 - 16 July, 2006.
