[an error occurred while processing this directive] Würzburg Residence is one of the most beautiful, grandest and largest Baroque palaces in Germany. It is surrounded by magnificent Court Gardens and Residence Square. The palace was commissioned by the prince bishop of Wüzburg, Johann Philipp Franz von Schöborn and his brother Friedrich Carl von Schönborn in 1720.

Some of the best Baroque architects in Austria and Germany were hired to design the palace, including Balthasar Neumann, Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, Maximilian von Welsch, Robert de Cotte and Germain Boffrand. The residence was completed in 1744. Within it are spectacular frescoes painted by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and his son Domenico.

Würzburg Residence with the Court Gardens and Residence Square was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 5th session of the World Heritage Committee in Sydney, Australia, on 26-30 October, 1981.
