Yosemite was made a protected park as early as 1864, when a park bill passed both houses of Congress and was signed by President Abraham Lincoln. This act of setting aside land for preservation and public use provided the precedence for the creation of Yellowstone as the first national park in 1872.

Yosemite National Park was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the X session of the World Heritage Committee
